Dr. Sullivan was a main character from The Grudge 3, portrayed by Shawnee Smith. Dr. Sullivan is the psychiatrist of Jake Kimble, after the boy has his whole family murdered and blames an evil spirit for their deaths. After he dies an unnatural death, Dr. Sullivan goes on an investigation and crosses paths with the same grudge curse that victimized her patient.

She is the 4th victim to die in the film.

History[]

Dr. Sullivan assumed Jake as her patient some time after the deaths at the apartment building. In his therapy, she recorded Jake's accounts about the evil spirit he blamed for the deaths. Dr. Sullivan, naturally skeptical about his claims of the evil spirit, concluded that this was a delusion created by Jake to hide from the truth, that his stepmother Trish murdered his father and sister (which is only partially true, as Trish did murder Bill but under the influence of the curse). Dr. Sullivan was forced to keep Jake locked in a cell in the mental hospital after his constant escape attempts. One night, Jake was brutally murdered by a "hallucination", which led Dr. Sullivan to investigate his former home, the apartment complex. There, she informed Lisa Morrison (who confused Dr. Sullivan with one more reporter) that Jake had passed away, and that his funeral would be conducted the next day. Dr. Sullivan asked Lisa if there was any other boys in the building, to which Lisa replied that Jake was the only one, but added that her sister Rose had seen another one.

Dr. Sullivan and Lisa then met at the funeral, and Dr. Sullivan later invited her into her office, where she showed Lisa her detailed research on the building deaths, which led Dr. Sullivan to discover a similar, Japanese murder-suicide case, where a father, Takeo Saeki, murdered his wife Kayako and son Toshio. Lisa recognized the boy from the photograph, and also watched Jake's video, with his description of Kayako's evil spirit.

Sometime later, alone in her office, Dr. Sullivan saw Toshio in one of the halls through the surveillance camera. She went there to check for herself and found nobody. As she’s returning to her office, she encounters Kayako's evil spirit, shocked to see that Jake was telling the truth the whole time. Dr. Sullivan is followed throughout the hallways by Kayako, until she encounters a door that won’t unlock. Helplessly pleading to an janitor on the opposite side to help her, Kayako corners her before she finally murders her by violently breaking her neck, spraying blood on the door window. Her body was found the next day by some employees.

Aftermath[]

Lisa attempted to contact Dr. Sullivan after she was kicked out from her apartment by a possessed Max Morrison, receiving no answer and was instead contacted by an employee saying that she has "passed away".

Trivia[]

  • Dr. Sullivan's death is the second in the Grudge films in which a victim is killed by having her neck broken (following Aubrey Davis). Three if you count Kayako herself having her neck snapped by Takeo.
  • In her mural, a Japanese news report on the Kimble deaths can be seen.
  • Dr. Sullivan collected a sketch of Kayako, presumably obtained from Jake's descriptions. The drawing closely resembles Takako Fuji even though the character is portrayed by Aiko Horiuchi in this installment.
