Megumi Okina (奥菜恵 Okina Megumi, born 6 August 1979) is a Japanese actress and J-Pop singer. She starred in Ju-on: The Grudge as Rika.

Biography[]

Born in Hiroshima and raised in Tokyo, Okina made her J-Pop debut on 19 August 1995 starting with この悲しみを乗り越えて (lit. Overcome this Sadness). While using her real name as her stage name, Okina is sometimes referred to as "The Okina" in countries outside of Japan.

Okina's music career was the focus of her affiliation with the entertainment business as she began to release new singles and albums yearly in Japan.

Television Actress[]

Around the same time as her rise to J-pop, Okina appeared in several television films and television series starting with Naito heddo (1995). Okina appeared in over four television series fulfilling the roles of both minor and major characters.

After receiving acclaim for her music in Japan, Okina was approached by Takashi Shimizu to have a major role in in upcoming horror film inspired by a previous film he made. Seeing an opportunity to enhance her acting career and possibilities, Okina accepted and played the role of Rika Nishina in Ju-on: The Grudge.

Return to Television[]

After the success of Ju-on: The Grudge, Okina's began appear in more television series like Kyôhansha and Konya hitori no bed de (On the Single Bed Tonight) while continuing to advance her music career.

After her appearance in the Japanese film Inugami-ke no ichizoku (The Inugamis), Okina reported that she will be retiring from the entertainment business. However, this decision quickly changed as she appeared in the American remake of the Thai horror film, Shutter.

After Shutter, Okina returned to Japanese industries and decided to continue appearing in Japanese productions. Okina continues to appear in Japanese films outside of the horror genre along with television series appearances once again.

Marriage and Motherhood[]

Okina married Susumu Fujita in January 2004. They divorced on 22 July 2005. In 2007, Okina stated she was retiring from the entertainment business. However, she later had a role in the American remake of a 2004 Thai film, Shutter, released March 21, 2008. She portrayed a ghost named Megumi Tanaka.

Around March 12, 2009, she announced that she was four months pregnant and planning on marrying her boyfriend of two years, a businessman.[1]
